NEW YORK—January 12, 2016–Morgan James’s new release, The Day the Calf Ate the Chocolate Cake by Rachel Campbell Deddens, tells the story of how a little girl saves her family farm.
Rachel has always treasured her childhood memories of growing up on her family’s farm in Virginia. She spent her days working to care for the animals and spending time with her Granny, and when she got older she brought her own daughter back for visits to the land that she loved so much. These fond memories are what inspired her to write The Day the Calf Ate the Chocolate Cake.
This sweet children’s book is set in the past, when times were simpler, communities were stronger, and farms were a common way of making a living. The story follows a little girl named Margaret, who works on her family farm. One day Margaret overhears her parents talking in the kitchen about money struggles, and how they might have to sell their favorite calf to get by. Determined to help her family, Margaret enters a contest, hoping to win the cash prize for her family. When she succeeds, her family’s farm and favorite calf are saved!
The Day the Calf Ate the Chocolate Cake deals with emotions that both children and adults face, from sadness and worry to excitement and joy. The story also teaches important principles, such as responsibility, selflessness, and hard work. Children will love that the heroine is someone their age, showing that they too can make a difference, and parents will love the leadership and determination that Margaret instills in their kids.
Written with whimsical language that paints the scene and takes readers back to a simpler time, The Day the Calf Ate the Chocolate Cake is both entertaining and inspirational. The story grows with young readers, as they will take away new life lessons each time they read it. Parents, grandparents, and children will all enjoy this charming farm- yard tale.
