NEW YORK—Sept. 21, 2021—Morgan James’ new release, A Season in Queens, by Joanne and Gerry Dryansky, explores the human spirit through tough times where strength and resilience emerge after a tumultuous war.

In 1946 following World War II, amid the worst polio epidemic in American history and an outbreak of racism, soldiers returned home to Cambria Heights seeking an idyllic life but with physical, emotional, and psychological changes. Erin Burke recalls living during this period as a sixteen-year-old in a relationship with a disturbed veteran suffering from “shellshock” (now called post-traumatic stress disorder), and when she became a woman through a moment of his sexual abuse. A survivor of a botched illegal abortion, she manages to move forward in her life, recording those intimate details in a novel titled A Season in Queens.

Readers examine Burke’s turbulent childhood to understand how they can find the inner strength to overcome their dismal upbringing and discover their identity.

About the Author: Joanne and Gerry Dryansky grew up together in Queens, New York, a permanent couple since their first date when she was 14 and he 15. During most of their lives in Paris, rearing a son and daughter, they collaborated in Gerry’s role as foreign correspondent and magazine writer for several noted American publications. They finally left that behind to devote themselves entirely to fiction and film, combining Joanne’s innate perceptivity and Gerry’s analytical attitude. They say it’s as if they’ve shared their genes to bring to life a singular person who is Joanne and Gerry. Gerry calls Joanne “My ambassador from the human race,” bringing heart to his understanding. Both focused their education on the English language, Joanne at Queens College. After Gerry’s being graduated from Princeton, Joanne tutored poor children while Gerry earned a master’s from Harvard― before they “escaped” academia, when Gerry changed his life to be a cub reporter covering crime from 5PM to 2AM in the poor neighborhoods of Philadelphia. He went into the wider world of journalism, while together they have co-authoring novels and numerous optioned screenplays.
