NEW YORK—May 5, 2019—Morgan James’ new release, The Dream Thief: A Novel by Gregory Petersen, is a fictional story that explores the intersection of imagination, magic, and mental health in adolescent minds. Gregory Petersen depicts the necessary tension of losing childlike wonder and growing up the surrounding world within the mind of the story’s protagonist, Nadine Brier.
The Dream Thief follows the coming of age story of Nadine Brier, a young girl journeying from a small Missouri town to New York City. Nadine wrestles with the reality of hearing voices and having magical experiences as a child, both of which still impact her life as she grows into adulthood. Throughout her travels, she works through the events of her past, questioning what was real and what was imagined. Nadine must work through her inner demons if she ever hopes to discover the truth about who she is and what she’s seen.
In The Dream Thief, Gregory Petersen describes how a whimsical childhood can become a source of uncertainty and cause a young person to question what is real. Petersen writes about an adolescent’s search for meaning and identity as they grow, seeking to find a place of their own while still having a home to return to. He illustrates the loss of childhood friendships and innocence with humor and sorrow in equal measure, which authentically grounds the story. Petersen’s goal is to remind teenagers and young adults not to grow up too fast, if they can avoid it, because while everyone dies, not everyone truly lives.
