NEW YORK—January 23, 2018—Morgan James Kid’s new release, Our Moms by Quniana Futrell, touches on a sensitive subject that often goes ignored. Over 5 million children in the US have had incarcerated parents. The absence of their most important role models can cause serious emotional and psychological trauma. Q. Futrell addresses this issue in an effort to provide comfort and understanding to the children affected and ultimately spread awareness to the adults in their lives.
Our Moms is an easy-to-read guide addressing parental incarceration. Unlike other books on this topic, Our Moms is written as a children’s book, targeting the kids affected by the issue rather than the adults observing it. Knowing full well the devastation of having a parent in jail from her own personal experience, Q. Futrell is able to write in a loving and understanding manner that allows her young readers to connect with the story and to know that they are not alone in their struggles. In Our Moms, she reassures children that their situation is not their fault, and offers hope for their futures.
Beyond being a simple kid’s book, Our Moms is the start of a movement. Q. Futrell hopes that teachers, school administrators, social workers, and caregivers will utilize this revolutionary children’s book as a conversation starter and a tool to better relate to and support children with incarcerated parents in their time of need. She also hopes to raise awareness of this serious issue facing so many young people today and the detrimental effects it can have on their lives.
Every child deserves the chance to create their own story, not predetermined by their parents’ mistakes. With support, care, and the proper tools, the adults in their lives can help steer them towards a future of prosperity and success. Our Moms enables adults to nurture healthy, happy children.
