NEW YORK—July 13, 2021—Morgan James’ new release, In the Shadow of the Cities: A Novel, by Laurel Solorzano, follows Scarlett’s life in the training center before she is drawn unexpectedly into City life.

Solorzano starts the story with Scarlett in the training center, eager to get promoted to a Blue, but gets tossed into city life without proper training. Two rules Greens must never break: 1) Greens are not sent into cities without an official promotion to Blue, and 2) Blues don’t kill each other. Why is she sent to the cities if she has yet to be promoted? She learns her best friend, Rhys, is killed and is told from a bizarre, elderly man she will kill Rhys. Why does he tell her this and why would she do this? Adding to her confusion are these things called “families” and why the Citizens are ungrateful she is keeping them safe.

This dystopian novel examines life in the cities from a guard’s viewpoint. Questions that prompt further reading are why do the guards obey the government tirelessly and how can they be merciless in shooting citizens? Follow Scarlett as she travels In the Shadow of the Cities.
