Morgan James, the ONE Campaign and you
What is the ONE Campaign?
ONE is a nationwide effort to rally Americans to fight the emergency of global poverty. It is a broad movement of Americans from every state and walk of life. ONE believes that allocating an additional 1 percent of the U.S. budget—1 cent more for every dollar spent by the federal government—toward providing basic needs like shelter, health, education, clean water and food would transform the futures and hopes of an entire generation in the world’s poorest countries.
To date, more than 2 million people have lent their voices to ONE.
Why is Morgan James involved with the ONE Campaign?
Morgan James is among more than 70 U.S. nonprofit, advocacy and humanitarian organizations dedicated to ending poverty around the world. Morgan James joined the ONE Campaign as part of its commitment to making decent shelter a matter of conscience and action through advocacy and outreach. Partnering with the ONE Campaign, Morgan James is not only raising the collective conscience of the effects of extreme poverty on men, women and children, we are taking action with other organizations, faith-based groups, schools, celebrities, corporations, and you to encourage the U.S. government to allocate an additional 1 percent of the U.S. budget to help improve the lives of millions of people around the world.
How does the ONE Campaign support Morgan James' mission?
ONE links directly to Habitat for Humanity's international effort to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, eight goals developed during the 2000 U.N. Millennium Summit that set out to halve global poverty by 2015. If the United States were to devote an additional 1 percent to helping the world’s poorest people help themselves, the United States would demonstrate a commitment to improving the lives of 100 million slum dwellers; preventing 10 million children from becoming AIDS orphans; helping 104 million children into grade school; providing water to almost 900 million people around the globe; and saving almost 6.5 million children under 5 from dying of diseases that could be prevented with low-cost measures like vaccination or a well for clean water.
Access to housing is critical in this fight because of the tremendous impact adequate housing has on countless aspects of everyday life. Parents can provide stability for their children, enhance their family’s physical safety and security, improve their health and prevent disease, and increase educational and job prospects. Ending poverty and its deadly effects is integrally linked to our mission to end poverty housing.
How can I get involved?
By joining Morgan James and the ONE Campaign in calling for an additional 1 percent of the U.S. budget to be allocated toward humanitarian and development aid to the poorest nations, you are helping more families move out of poverty and on to safer, healthier and more promising lives. Make poverty history and poverty housing history by signing the ONE Campaign declaration today. Together, we can show that Americans believe poverty is unacceptable in our world.
